Waiz Plucked Instruments
WAIZ Plucked Instruments is an Italian lutherie workshop specializing in handcrafted ukuleles, banjoleles, guitars, and distinctive custom plucked instruments from its workshop in Comerio, Varese. Established from a foundation in formal lutherie training and artistic experimentation, WAIZ combines traditional instrument-making techniques with unconventional materials, original construction methods, and contemporary design. Its collection ranges from classic ukuleles to electric, travel, archtop, gourd, and banjo-style instruments, with each model developed to offer its own visual identity and tonal character. The workshop has also built an international following through its successful Kickstarter campaign and participation in ukulele festivals and events.
WAIZ Plucked Instruments stands out for its inventive approach to custom ukulele and banjolele design, combining Italian craftsmanship with materials and construction techniques rarely found on conventional instruments. Its banjoleles feature lightweight neck-through construction, Spanish cedar bodies, adjustable skin tension, and fish- or calf-skin soundboards, while models such as the Tembo travel ukulele emphasize portability, resonance, comfort, and distinctive design. The workshop also produces innovative electric ukuleles with chambered bodies, handwound pickups, and carefully selected tonewoods. By balancing traditional lutherie with experimentation and artistic expression, WAIZ creates handmade instruments for musicians seeking unique sound, character, and craftsmanship rather than mass-produced alternatives.
