14bitMIDI

14-bit MIDI is a high-resolution extension of the standard 7-bit MIDI protocol, offering 16,384 discrete steps compared to the 128 steps of 7-bit MIDI. This increased resolution is achieved by combining two MIDI Control Change (CC) messages: one for the Most Significant Byte (MSB) and another, 32 CC numbers higher, for the Least Significant Byte (LSB) . This allows for smoother parameter transitions, which is particularly beneficial for precise control over parameters like filter cutoff or pitch modulation. Electra One Community

Despite its advantages, 14-bit MIDI isn't widely adopted due to compatibility issues and the complexity of implementation. For instance, some software synthesizers may not fully support 14-bit CC messages, leading to inconsistent behavior . However, tools like the 14bitMIDI Sherlock plugin have been developed to facilitate high-resolution control, offering features like customizable interfaces and extensive command libraries for DAWs like Cubase and Nuendo. These tools aim to bridge the gap between the enhanced capabilities of 14-bit MIDI and the existing infrastructure of music production software.
