Greco Guitars

The Greco Guitar brand, established by Kanda Shokai in 1960, has played a significant role in shaping Japan’s guitar manufacturing industry. Initially, Greco-branded instruments focused on solid-body electric models, while acoustic guitars were released under the "Canda" name—both reflecting Kanda Shokai’s expanding musical ambitions. Throughout the late 1960s, Greco gained traction by introducing models inspired by popular Western designs, including Telecaster-style electrics and European-influenced acoustics. Their early collaboration with respected factories like FujiGen and Matsumoku ensured consistent quality, making Greco guitars a reliable choice for both domestic and export markets. The brand's original offerings, such as the semi-hollow "Shrike" with its distinctive pickup configuration, demonstrated a willingness to innovate beyond simple replication.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Greco evolved into a leading brand for both acoustic and electric instruments, thanks to their meticulous craftsmanship and use of quality components. The launch of the "Super Real Series" and later the "Mint Collection" elevated Greco’s reputation for high-standard electric replicas, while their acoustic lines continued to develop, drawing inspiration from both traditional and modern styles. Although changes in licensing and brand partnerships shifted their electric lineup in the early 1990s, Greco adapted by introducing fresh models with original headstock designs and continued to offer a variety of both acoustic and electric options. Today, Greco remains recognized for its versatile catalog, catering to players seeking both vintage-inspired and uniquely styled guitars with reliable performance and build quality.
